Students will be taught as a member of a chamber ensemble, with each group receiving a minimum of 9 coaching or combined class sessions per semester.

Vocal students will be assessed over three chamber performances across the year. These include the Oratorio concert, Opera Showcase and the Music Theatre Showcase. Progress assessments will be graded on attendance to rehearsals, which can fall outside of lecture times, and on commitment to each chamber rehearsal and class, regardless of whether a lecturer is present or not.

For Instrumental students, there will be one exam assessment at the end of each semester. All students are required to be present at all rehearsals, coaching sessions and performances.

Instrumental groups are required to perform a minimum of twice per semester in the general Performance Workshop 1-2.30 Fridays.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a range of chamber music skills.

    These should include:

    - Ensemble skills such as listening/ reacting to other group members with regard to ensemble, style, articulation, dynamic, intonation

    -Stylistic understanding of the chamber works studied, and the ability to portray this to an appropriately high level in performance

    -Basic understanding of group intonation

    -Individual technical skills appropriate to the work performed

    -The ability to give a competent performance of a chamber work

Assessments are made on the basis of student performance. This is either to judge progress from the previous session, or performance standard. The instrumental end of semester assessments will be in the beginning of June 2019 (date TBC) for the first semester and around mid October 2019 for the second. The Instrumental Chamber Music Competition will take place around mid June 2019 TBC.

The vocal chamber music assessments for A and B semesters TBA.

Extensive and intelligent listening to recordings and concerts is one of the primary tools for developing musicianship. Daily listening to RadioNZ Concert should be undertaken. Students should use the online resource Naxos Music Library and the library CD collection as well as attend Wednesday lunchtime concerts, NZSO concerts (Founders Theatre), and all Chamber Music New Zealand concerts. Students are encouraged to make an effort to attend NZ Opera performances (held in Auckland).

Workload

On a weekly basis, students should expect to attend regular coaching sessions, Friday Performance Workshop 1- 2.30. Instrumental students should have a minimum of two two-hour group rehearsals per week, and an additional hour of individual practice. Singers should expect to spend two hours per week on individual study, with group rehearsals also arranged, and attended.
